Hello, i was wondering if anyone can either tell me ot lead me in the direction of any info about carl janaway? as a kid i knew carl of course by that time he was down to one leg and driving a AMC pacer with alot of magnetic signs stuck to it Smile my grandmothers have told me alot of stories about his known and alleged exploits during the 30's but he was never one to talk about himself( at least not to a kid) i remeber there was a writeup in the local paper years ago about his exploits andi remember that he was not to happy about it he was threatening to sue the paper and the reporter over not only the story but the physical sescription of him in the story. He was definetly a character.

According to a quick check of the Daily Oklahoman Electronic Archives between 1931-1939, there were six (6) articales listed:

6/26/1936 (p11c2) {Muskogee dateline} - "Hungry Felon Dines In Camp" Carl Janaway escaped from Arkansas' Tucker Prison Farm in April. He was serving a seven (7) year sentence for burglary, grand larceny, and kidnapping. He hijacked a couple of fishermen in the Cookson Hills, stealing their car and eating their food!

8/17/1936 (1/8) {Sallisaw dateline} "Auto Bandit Says He's Carl Janaway" Holds-up Hugh Morrison and has a minor shoot-out with a Deputy Sheriff - - no hits!

9/18/1936 (8/8) {Sallisaw dateline} "Search Spurred for Carl Janaway" Over 125 deputies (and three bloodhounds) scour the hills for the 96 pound desperado. He shot/wounded Deputy Raymond Drake.

12/28/1936 (2/8) "Carl Janaway Caught in St. Louis Net" Shot/wounded patrolman Ed Schulz. Tried to steal auto, but driver took-off. Tried to steal taxi cab, but cab driver ran-him-down!

12/31/1936 (3/3) "Sequoyah Sheriff Goes (To St. Louis) For Janaway" Oklahoma wants him for robbery with firearm. Governor signs extradition papers.

2/6/1937 (13/5) {St. Louis dateline} "Convict Sentenced for Theft of Auto" Pled guilty in Federal Court. Sentenced to 10 years. He had kidnapped Willima Hicks in Doniphan (Mo); Hicks escaped in Effingham, Illinois. (I guess Mr. Janaway didn't want to go back to Tuckers Farm!)

Carl Janaway also received an dis-honorable mention in "Line-up" section of True Detective Magazine (Jan. 1937 p65). Photo and wanted poster for escapees.

Hi,

You may also want to read "Carl Janaway 'Smartest Bandit of the Cookson Hill" by Gary Courtney, published by Authorhouse in 2008.

Although Janaway was a bit of a sensation in these parts for a few months back
in the 1930s I believe he was quite a teller of tales. He did have a knack for
auto theft and evading the law as well as being an escape artist tho. Was
involved in a few armed robberies and wounded a deputy sheriff at the old Ford
Bradshaw place, which produced a major manhunt. But, the idea that he was the
Terror of the Ozarks and Pretty Boy Floyd's right hand man as well as Grover
Bishop's chief nemesis is stretching the facts. Although he lived an interesting
life he was actually a minor hoodlum of the times. The fact is, he outlived all
the other deppression-era Oklahoma bandits and was able to tell the story his
own way.......Ron
