Hello from the pre 1907 side of the board, where I usually post. I've become interested in the Honorable Manuel Herrick, Oklahoma 8th District Congressional Representative elected in 1920. He hired as his secretary a Major Gilstrap, who had a command in the Oklahoma National Guard. The claim is made ( by Gene Aldrich, in The Okie Jesus Congressman) that "when the bank at Stroud, Oklahoma was robbed, his [i.e. Gilstrap's] company was called out to give chase to the western desperado, Henry Starr"(161). Obviously, this is inaccurate, in that Starr was wounded and captured near the scene of the crime. But was the National Guard really mobilized to pursue the other gang members who escaped into the Osage Hills? How common was it for the National Guard to assist in the pursuit of outlaws?
