It is said that there was a murder of a "rich man" in Kansas in the late 20's. My Grandfather had a garage/service station in Thackerville.
a man stopped there for service and the attendant noticed blood on the interior of the car. He notified the Constable who somehow put 2 and 2 and came up with the driver being the suspect the Kansas authorities were looking for and placed him under arrest. There was national coverage and Sheriff Sam Randolph took all the credit and the spotlight..the constable saw the sheriff enter the local grocery store, walked in and shot the sheriff dead.. My grandfather helped make the constables bond of $10,000.00 and the constable was a no show in court..broke my grandad and about 3 other locals.. ring any bells out there???
