The May Farm

In the search of the path of Charlie Chapman, bank robber, I have run upon the name of "THE MAY FARM," where known felons stayed, hidout etc until the heat of the law cooled down. It seems that after his last escape from prison in 1937, CHAPMAN, stayed here for several months until he made his escape back into Mississippi. It seems the owner of the farm's son was executed a few years before which mayh explaon his contempt of the law. The son's name may have been W.D. MAY.

Has anyone ever heard or have info on this hideout?

Hi,

It would help to know what state, county and/or city this "May Farm" was located, as I have never heard of it? Maybe that can pinpoint us to research this one for you better. Thanks!

Thanks for questioning my request. I will provide what I know and a lot of what I speculate.

As I said I have info that Charlie Chapman stayed at "The May Farm" in 1937 alter his escape from prison in 1937. It was a known harbor for running criminals and the FBI was well informed. I do not know the name of the owner but the son was Executed by the State of Texas on Sept 6, 1935 for killing his partners after a holdup for their part of the prize money.
I did find the following under :Find a Grave," and feel certain this is the family: This grave is located in Rust County Tx and I also have record of W. D.'s farm being in Handley:
******************************
From Find a Grave
Birth: 1896
Death: Sep. 6, 1935

Son of J.W. May and Rosana May, and the grandson of Martha May (also buried at Pleasant Hill).

William unfortunately took a wrong turn in life and ended up a train robber, a murderer, and an executed man. He was also inmate No. 126 in Alcatraz Federal Prison.
*******************
Since the boy, W. D., had been executed at the time of Charlie's last escape in 1937 I would suppose the "Hideout" was on the propery of his father. Best Guess!!

Anyway, The name "May Farm" and "Hidout" and "Known hidout by FBI" has come up and I am trying to identify the where abouts, the owners, and what sits there now and more especially if there has ever been any writeup on it.

Hi,

There is no such county in Texas called Rust County. Did you mean Rusk County, Texas??? If so, try TXGENWEB to see what you can find, otherwise Texas is such a large state it would be pretty hard to find what your looking for without an exact location. Oklahombres deals mainly with Oklahoma lawmen/outlaw history. When you get to other states; I for one do not claim to be an expert. Once you can pinpoint the location a local county historical group may be your best bet for help. Good luck!
