I am looking for any information possible about a shoot out in Elgin oklahoma after the robbery of the elgin bank. My great grand father was very young when this took place but still remembered things up to his death about a year or so ago. I was just wanting to find out as much as possible about it thank everyone who tries to help with this search in advance. If anyone knows anything about it let me know. I know there was an article in a paper either in sterling elgin or I think marlow about it but i am not completely sure

Mekong, There is an article in the Spring 2007 OKOLHA journal about the death of McClain County deputy sheriff J.E. Wilson that is possibly the bank robbery in Elgin and subsequent murder of a law officer. The robbery was on May 31, 1935. A posse of officers from several agencies tracked the robbers to a farm house about 11 miles southeast of Elgin. Beaver Creek would be about 11 miles east of Elgin and runs north and south. The robbers had taken the farm family hostage. Evidently Wilson and the other officers didn't know the robbers were in the farm house. Wilson entered the home to check for information and was shot in the chest with a .38 pistol and in the back with a shotgun. Wilson wounded one of the robbers, Charles Sands, in both legs and one foot before dying. A gunfight ensued with 3 officers being wounded, the wive of the farmer killed, and 2 of the 3 robbers captured. The captured robbers, Sands and Leon Siler, were convicted and sentenced to death. They were electrocuted at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary on June 11, 1937.

Do you know the approximate year? One place to start on line is through the rootsweb network. They have one by each county with volunteers to help. You might also check with the local library.
