Tennessee was a black deputy city marshal of Oktaha (Muskogee Co). The evening of Saturday, March 25, 1905, he was on duty at a black dance in Oktaha when some drunk white men started "looking on". When Tennesse tried to arrest one of the men, Walter Woods, one of his friends, John Price, shot the deputy. Deputy Tennessee died the next day.
