“Would the real Judge stand up, Please” There was a mystery man! He went by "Judge South". His true name was never established. Deputy Marshal G R Tucker said he was not a judicial officer but was a wampus cat. He was said to be over six feet tall, and must have weighted more than two hundred pounds. His formidable appearance was enhanced by a huge black beard. His reputation as an outlaw demanded respect, even from the deputy marshals. He wasn’t a saloon tough. He was intelligent and resourceful and he wasn’t in the game for petty personal things. He was cold as steel. Tucker and five possemen arrested him on Mud Creek in I. T. With him was Bob McFarland, who also had a warrant for arrest. They found them hiding at the Luke place. Marsshal Tucker confronted them with a sawed-off shotgun and gained surrender by letting him know "I"ll kill you if you make a move". He didn't move. Tucker said McFarland was gutless and had no trouble getting him to throw down his Winchester. South was the robber of a train near Fort Worth, and the railroad has posted a $1,000 reward. Eyewitness identified South as the robber but the Railroad refused to pay Tucker the reward. When they asked him what his name was, he refused to answer so they registered him as Mr. Train Robber. South was taken to Fort Smith on a murder charge on an Indian Police named Naked Hand. South was found not guilty and returned to Paris, TX. At Paris, he was tried on horse-stealing. He was charged with stealing 10 horses from up around Sapulpa. He was convicted but they never found out what his real name was. He was indicted and tried under the name of Judge South. No one believed it to be his true name. He went to prison in Detroit, Michigan. McFarland beat the rap. Norm Brown

Norm, Very interesting story. I'd like to know more about this character. Would you mind listing your "source(s)" so that we can locate and read the entire account as printed? Thank you!

Hey Oldwest, I believe there is some info on Tucker in the Western History Collections at OU where we may be able to locate more info on this outlaw. Very interesting story that I've never run across before. I can't recall ever seeing this outlaw mentioned. Look forward to the new book Norm. When is it due out? Diron: Yes, there is a document by Tucker and Mike Tower obtained a copy and sent to me. I hope to finish up by Summer. I'm having a lot of fun researching and writing his life story! I'm receiving some great help from Mike Towers and others. This Judge South is very interesting and so far I have found nothing more about him. I hope the Ft. Smith Elevator will provide some additonal information on him. He did go to prison under that name. Thanks Diron! Norm Brown
