I am trying to find any information about my great-uncle, Noah Condry. He was killed by a posse in the early nineteen hundreds. He lived in the Claremore,Oklahoma area. His obituary was published in the "Southwest City Leader" and indicated he was wanted in Miami, Oklahoma and "six or seven other towns". He was supposedly guilty of stealing horses, cattle, and mules, and also selling whiskey in Indian Territory. If anyone has any ideas where I can look to find more information, please let me know. Thanks.

Horse theft was still a favorite pursuit of outlaws up until about 1925. I read somewhere that World War I and over production of tank and truck engines increased the availability of tractors and spelled the end of horse theft as a common crime.
As to where to look, you might check with the Oklahoma Historical Society or Western History Museum at OU concentrating on existing records of the Anti-Horse Theft Associations. But, my guess is that you're going to have to do a year by year search of newspapers (on microfilm at OHS). Many times, in the early years, each case being heard by the court was listed, followed by the result. Some of the other responders might be aware of a book or individual who might know, but it would help if you gave an approximate year(s) of your relative's active career.

Thank you very much for your reply and for the ideas of where I might look. Unfortunately Uncle Noah was not much discussed in the family when I was growing up. I have recently received some information from a relative which states that he fell to the posse of Marshall Jeff Viles. (City Marshall of Grove, Oklahoma) And the obituary I mentioned yesterday was from a book entitled "1901 Benton Co., Ark. Obituaries", and had been from the S.W.City Leader.

Grove, Oklahoma was just over the border from Southwest City, Mo. His companion when he was killed was J.D. Dickerson. So I have more now to research. Thanks again,
