I don't know. Many sources agree that the first train robbery west of the Mississippi river was by the James/Younger gang in July 1873 at Adair, Iowa (not to be confused with Adair, IT, where the Daltons robbed a Katy train in 1892). Some six months after the Adair, Iowa robbery, the James/Younger gang robbed a train at Gad's Hill in Missouri. According to The Cherokee Advocate in an article entitled "The Genesis of a Train Robbery," July 8, 1893 (the full text of which is reproduced on the Mollie's Corner website), "The first train robbery to attract general attention occurred less than 20 years ago at Gad's Hill, a small station on the Iron Mountain Railroad." --meursault
