Looking for suggestions on GOOD books about the Law and Lawmen during the Judge Parker tenure.
Now, I am a serious reader. Please, no book that history has now shown to be very inaccurate. It can be a general history or on a specific person. What is the best book on Judge Parker, his court and his Marshals and deputies? Is there one that wraps all of those elements in one? I know there are alot out there. Give me your recommendations. Thanks. |

I am looking for good reading. A good book to curl up with on a long winters night. I just recently read books on Heck Thomas, Chris Masden, and one called Iron Men. Just looking for suggestions on others. Looking for one on Judge Parker. If anyone has read one of the several books out there on him, which did you like best?

Glenn Shirley wrote "Law West of Fort Smith" and "Belle Star and Her Times." Both good reading books. You need to find "Hell on the Border" by Harmon, the Fort Smith National Historic Site sells this book. You also need to read "Black, Red and Deadly," by Art Burton. These would make a good start.

Thanks Kid. Is the book Hell on the Border about Judge Parker?

Harmon's Hell on the Border has a lot of stuff on Judge Parker, and is an important source for students of the period. Incidentally, it is suspected that Harmon is not the book's true author, but instead functioned as a ghostwriter for Attorney J. Warren Reed, a prominent lawyer who successfully opposed Parker on many cases. Perhaps the most recent account of Parker is Roger Tuller, "Let No Guilty Man Escape: A Judicial Biography of Hanging Judge Isaac Parker," published by the Univ. of Oklahoma in 2001. I'd second Mr. Kid's recommendations on other material.

I think I'd add to the list already given that of "Alias Frank Canton," by Robert K. DeArment. It will give you the good, the bad, and the really ugly about one deputy. It's a smooth read and packed with information.
I'm editing in a link with lots of books on the subject including one by member Bob Ernst, just out called "Deadly Affrays." http://www.silverstarcollectables.com/resource.htm This message has been edited. Last edited by: Tower, |
