osiyo, I thank you, and I appreciate your input. I have read that people refused to register (Dawes), and people on the Dawes commission would send someone to arrest the person/s.

And just on the record concerning John Newcomb, and Charles Coker, someone was listed as white, but wasn't, I don't think either person was.

My family had the same experience. My Great Grandmother, Mary Hicks, and her family were forced by Jackson to leave their Cherokee home in Georgia and settled in Arkansas Territory at Magazine Mountain. After establishing themselves for a decade or two the Territory was divided into the State Arkansas and Indian Territory. All Cherokee living in the half that became Arkansas were given the choice of moving to Indian Territory or submitting themselves to the state of Arkansas. After losing one one home in Georgia, my family chose to stay in Arkansas and submit to the laws of the state.

Hello Doctor,
Kind of my situation as well. My folks ended partly in Poteau, Wilburton and Williams Oklahoma. They lost all they had. I am not sure all my folk submitted the law of the State however. |
