When a friend and descendant of John Wesley Hardin told me about a gunfight involving his little brother Jeff Hardin piqued my interst; especially since the gunfight location was in my back yard, or almost. For about 5 years now, I was going to take the road trip tomorrow....always tomorrow. That became reality yesterday. Jeff Hardin operated a Saloon in Duncan, Indian Territory from about 1892-1895. He had a gunfight with Bob Ford (the killer of Jessie James) over in Colorado and later killed a man in Scurry Co., TX. He was killed 1901 in Kent Co., TX. Five years has resulted in a large folder of information and yesterday's trip added some photos of the Ghost town and murder scene. We drove north 45 miles to Post, TX, then east for 38 miles to Clairemont courthouse and old jail, then the cemetery, then south for 20 miles to acreek where Hardin killed a suspected rustler, then 14 miles to home. A fun day it was. The digital camera came in handy as well as plenty of water. The only problem was horse flies. They almost ate us alive. But I saw no horses....<S> As Diron and Mike Tower said "The hunt is part of the fun in doing research". | |||
