I am researching the lineage of a James Pepper of the Kaw (Kanza) nation. His family believes that he was a Marshal or Deputy Marshal. His traditional name was Makompah and was part of the relocation in 1872 from Kansas to Oklahoma. The latest photograph of him I have seen was taken in 1916 and he is allegede to have received a Presidential Peace Medal in 1902 when he was the last traditional chief of the Kanza. He had either four or five children (Maggie, Ralph, Spray, Elizabeth, and possibly Luther). His birth and death dates are not available at the moment. His grave was exhumed in 1972 or '74 when Wachunga (old Kaw City) was relocated to Newkirk for the filling of a new lake in Oklahoma, but most of his personal effects were taken. Does anybody know anything of James Pepper?
