I am looking for information on James Brennan. He was the man who killed Col. Sam N. Wood not long after the famous Hay Meadow Massacre in No Man’s Land. The murder occurred in Hugoton, Kansas on
June 23, 1891. It is thought that it was in reality a conspiracy but Brennan was the killer. He committed this murder in broad daylight in front of many witnesses and was taken into custody there.
After some time, while trying to hold a trial it was discovered that they could not find an impartial jury. Since this was all part of a feud between Hugoton and Woodsdale involving getting railroads and thus the county seat, the whole area was prejudiced either for or against Sam Woods killer. Because of a quirk in Kansas law that said only the defendant could ask for a change of venue, they had no choice but to let him go.
David Wood, Sam’s son didn’t let the matter go and personally perused the case. He finally found Brennan about 20 years later and tried to have him extradited. For some reason, Oklahoma refused. Incidentally, it was while this was in the press that the famous picture of the massacre surfaced. One D. Early of Washunga read the Wichita Eagle and sent it to them He had taken it the morning after before the bodies were moved.
He was working as a photographer in Morton County, KS at the time.

There used to be a picture of Brennan and his grave on one of the Ken Butler “Hay Meadow Massacre” web pages but for some reason they have disappeared. Mr. Butler’s short synopsis says . . . .

Brennan moved into the newly opened Oklahoma Territory, where he became a prominent and prosperous rancher. One unconfirmed account reports that James Brennan was elected and honorably served as Kiowa (Southwestern Oklahoma) County Sheriff. In November 1916, while Brennan lived at Gotebo, OK, he passed away and was buried in a cemetery north of Enid.
