Hi,all.
My name is Carl and I just wanted to say hi (just joined this group).
I became interested/obsessed with the Barkers
in 1970,after reading a juicy novel called
MOTHER'S DAY by J.M.Ryan.

One thing led to another, and I started reading
real books on the Barker-Karpis gang.
I was stunned when Karpis referred to Fred
as a "natural born killer".

I'm very interested in the demise of Ma & Fred, and saw that someone here is researching it.

Looking forward to lots of chat.

Hi! Carl, I am also in the beginning stages of researching the Barker Gang, especially Fred. My late husband's grandfather was a private detective in Tulsa,Ok. and was instrumental in getting Fred Barker arrested and sent to jail. The judge on the case gave Floyd Bays a colt 45 that is supposed to be Fred Barker's. I'm trying to get some documentation of this event to validate the gun. This gun is a historical artifact and belongs to Oklahoma's history. I'd love to talk about this some more. How can I get back issues of the Oklahombre Journal? Could you give me the names of the "real" books you read on the Barker-Karpis Gang? Thanks

Hi,

The best book is by Robert Winter, "Mean Men: The Sons of Ma Barker," which tells of the exploits of the gangs early years. "Public Enemies" by Bryon Burrough is also an excellent book, telling of ther gangs moves during the 1930's. Just about any book describing the depression era outlaws mentions the Barker Gang.

I don't want to be a nerd, but shouldn't this discussion be in the gangster era forum. (smile)

Thanks for the info on the books concerning the Barker "outlaws". I will look into getting them ASAP. I have a gentleman with knowledge about Colt 45 revolvers checking on the gun I have, which is supposed to be Fred Barker's weapon. This gun is what spurred my interest in this outlaw family. I may have a very historical item!
