For those interested in deputy marshal fees: Note: Salaries were not paid to deputies prior to 1896. While reviewing and continuing to work on the manuscript of "Danger Trails" George Tucker went to Ardmore (around 1892-93 timeframe) and arrested 3 men for the murder of a man named McKinney. He took them to sherman where Federal Judge Bryant set bond for all 3 and Tucker wrote that this should not happen as murder was not bondable. He had 2 guards with him and they took the prisoners on to Paris, TX where US Marshal williams helped the 3 men make bond. Tucker went on to say "I got two dollars and a half for each arrest and ten cents per mile for myself, for each guard and each prisoner". That comes out to .60 cents per mile which offset the low 2.50 warrant serving fee. The 3 men went to trail and were acquitted. McKinney's murder or murderers' were probably never brought to justice. | |||
