I am researching a man who was killed in Carter County in 1918. However, I have found where he was in IN TY as early as 1894 when his daughter was born. The information that I have is that he was working as an "Indian Agent" but descendants do not know in what town they were living when the daughter was born.
I haven't a clue as to where one would begin to look to verify when/where a person may have worked as an "Indian Agent" circa 1894-1896? Cany someone point me in the right direction? |

Depends on what locale he was an Indian Agent in. Might check the area newspapers (ie those in the various nations), OHS has Indian Agency papers on microfilm. What was the man's name? I might already have info on him if he was an Indian Agent in the southern part of I.T.

Diron:
Sorry I could't get back any sooner. The name I am looking for is Rufus P. Highnote. The time frame he supposedly worked as an "indian agent" or "government agent" - depending upon which descendant I talk with, was circa 1890 - 1895. I searched the Indian Affairs annual reports at ODL but did not find where he was listed (spent hours doing that). I'm hoping if I can identify what area of the state he may have been in then I would go to the newspapers and see what I can find. Given the fact that when his wife died in 1894 and he took her back to Palo Pinto Co., TX to be buried, I have to think it was in southern OK somewhere. |

That name does not sound familiar to me. I have found several men who were identified as an "Indian agent" who actually were mere employees of the agency. I guess if you loosely translate the term it could be an agent of the agency, but the actual "Indian Agent" was appointed by the Quakers early on and then later by the federal government.
Good luck! On the Trail Diron Ahlquist Secretary, Oklahombres Inc. |

Thanks for checking.
I have spent quite a bit of time reading the Annual Reports of the Indian Affairs Office and the Interior Department for the time frame in question; these listed agents and employees - but no Rufus. I also searched the "United States Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C. Biographical and Historical Indes of American Indians and Persons Involved in Indian Affairs at the Okalhoma History Center - still no Rufus. I've concluded that the family of Rufus made up the term "indian agent" to save face for the embarrassment he caused them. I have located where he is buried and will be making a trip down into TX to do more research on his family. |
