I am trying to locate any info on a Jason. W. James, purportedly a Texas Ranger during the 1880's, who ventured into I.T. around 1883. I can find nothing on this Ranger at all, is he a figment of someone's imagination? Can anyone direct me to a possible source for research?

Thanks,
Judy

Judy:
Yes, he did exist.
Jason Walker James was born 28 Apr, 1843 in Missouri and in 1850 & 1860 he was located in Lafayette, MO. By 1870 he was in Morehouse, LA.
He moved to Texas about 1883.
He was a Captain in the CSA out of LA and did serve as a Texas Ranger for a short time.

There is a lenghty article written about him, that covers most of his adult life..etc.

He died in Texas (1933 I think) and was a rancher. I can give you a url to obtain a copy (free) of his death certificate if so inclinded.

I have found rootsweb to be a great source for information and of course, there are many other sites of great value.

Thanks, Norm. I think the owner of the site your link took me to is on another board that my husband is a member of. I was aware of the article mentioned there, but what I am trying to research is his career as a Texas Ranger. I can find no actual Official Record of him being a Ranger, only various articles that say he was.
Am I overlooking a source for official records?

Also, thank you for the offer of the url for the death cert., my husband would definitely be interested in obtaining a copy.

I agree with you on Rootsweb, they really are a wealth of information. I do try to steer away from the Genforums, though. I have found that anything involving the "James" family is highly controversial there, and "Theories" abound..

Appreciate your help!

For the death Certificate email me at:
turfbinder@yahoo.com and I will get a copy to you.

Now, the Texas Rangers archives are in Waco, TX and they are very helpful folks. I have called upon them many times due to my Daughter's husband and ancestors being Texas Rangers.

Google Texas Rangers and stay away from the baseball team. Chcck out the site and find the contact info. Here is what they say: "We regret that there is no master list of all Texas Rangers. Finding evidence of service requires examination of state records, archives, photographs, books and magazine articles. This can be done (1) by an on site visit in Waco or (2) a mail-in request and payment of a service fee".

When I receive you email request I will send the Death Certificate to you.

Good hunting
