Sheriff B.F. Jones was shot and killed at the McAlester Store in Sept, 1876 by an intermarried white man, Robert Ream(s). Ream(s) is recorded as a friend of JJ McAlester and DM Hailey, two very rich and powerful white men in the region at the time. McAlester and Haily may have been present when Sheriff Jones was shot, but that fact is unknown. There were other men present as history records show Sheriff Jones being shot by others as he laid on the floor. Jones is inscribed on two memorials honoring lawmen killed in the line of duty. Any information from this era regarding the McAlester area and the Choctaw Nation would be helpful. Thank You.
