I found this in the Worth County Index, (Iowa) November 1, 1894. Could this be the Bob Dalton of Coffeeville fame? I don't remember ever reading that he was arrested and condemned to hang for murder in Tahlequah, but it has been a long time since I read anything about the Daltons.
A DESPERATE light occurred In the Tahlequah, I. T., jail betwoon Eli Levy, Chulo Starr, and Bob Dalton, all of 'whom ' wero under sentence of death. Levy got possession of a razor and made an assault on the other two prisoners, cutting Starr fatally, when ho was knocked senseless by Dalton, who used a chulr. fracturing Levy's skull and otherwise Injuring him so that he cannot recover. Jim Cook, a brother of tho loader of tho noted Cook gang of desperados who was under arrest for murder, has made his escape. While in charge of two guards he made a break for liberty, and. after giving his captors a severe tussle, got free of them. Although hampered by a heavy chain locked about his wrist and ankle, he outran the guards and warded off the bullets directed at him. |

Since Bob Dalton was killed at Coffeyville on 5 October 1892 the "Bob Dalton" mentioned here must be another guy.

Thanks guys, I should have looked that up my self, but I was thinking Coffeeville happened later than it did. I wonder what happened to Bill Cooks brother after his escape?

By the way, I am sorry about the typos in the newspaper article. I cut and pasted it from the newspaper archive and a lot of the letters did not come out right. I noticed it toward the end and corrected a lot of the mistakes but I see now that I missed a lot of them early in the article. Also, Levy survived his cracked skull and died on the Tahlequah gallows about three weeks after this happened.

Jim Cook was killed by some black cowboys up near Nowata, Cherokee Nation.

Thanks Art. Loved your book.

Dr. Rigsby, Thank you. My next one will be on the infamous outlaw Cherokee Bill, who once stuck up a stagecoach near Tahlequah.
