Looking for date Eli Hickman "Heck" Bruner was commissioned as US Deputy Marshall.
Also would like clarification about a rumor I've heard that a cousin or brother of Heck Bruner was on the wrong side of the law. Does anyone have information about Heck Bruner? He was my great-grandmother's brother-in-law. |

I've collected quite a lot of information about Bruner, but have been lacking his professional data, such as arrests, warrants he carried out, notorious persons he came into contact with... Didn't have his Oath of Office date until now - thank you for that.
What started as a general genealogical quest to fill in some of the missing blanks on that part of our family tree turned into a serious historical interest in the man himself. My granddad used to talk about "Uncle Heck" coming through Siloam Springs or Rogers where his family lived, staying at his parents' home. He'd arrive with "guests" of the Marshal Service tagging along in chains, shackles and handcuffs. Granddad described Uncle Heck as being a light sleeper, lying down fully dressed with his long rifle laid lengthwise across his body for easy access, and these criminals being chained to the iron bedpost so as to make a clatter if they so much as twitched. Granddad said he'd be awake all night when he was there, terrified, hiding under his bed quaking in fear that someone might escape and harm him or his family. He was about 18 years old when Bruner drowned. |

I'm not sure which interview in the I&P files you need. You might try a quick search at this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/pioneer/pioneer.htm
All the volumes can be found at either the Oklahoma Historical Society or the OU Western History Museum. If transportation is a problem, the Historical Society has volunteers who will look up and copy the material for a small fee. The magazine articles may be on file at the Western History Museum, you can do a search on line by accessing the Libraries of the University of OKlahoma. There are also several good book stores out there selling old copies of these mags. One is GJim <jarnersr@wyomerc.com> |
