On Sat. Just a brief followup report on the "Decendants Day" event in which I was a volunteer and a participant. It was a huge success, attended by over 450 people and attracting approximately 73 decendants. Notable speakers included Mr. Art Burton and Phillip Steele. Mr. William Black, the Superintendent of the Ft. Smith National Historic Site, notes that "the event made an extremely positive impact on the US Marshals Service Historian who now realizes the incredible support and interest this community has in locating their museum to Fort Smith." I, for one, was amazed at the level of current interest this period of history is still able to generatw.

It was a great event and I was honored to part of the program. Fort Smith is the most logical place in the U.S. for the U.S. Marshals Museum. I hope the folks in D.C. realize this reality.

Is the U.S. Marshal's History Day at Fort Smith going to be an annual event? I wasn't able to attend the first one in 2004 but was under the impression it would be held annually. I have heard nothing further..........Connie

I'm not aware that there are currently any plans to make the Descendant's Day an annual event. I do know that the Park Service was most impressed by the turnout, so I'd speculate that other such events will be scheduled. The big news today in Ft. Smith is that yet another delegation from the US Marshal's Service is in town, evaluating our suitability for the Museum.
