Texas gunman "Wild" Bill Longley was supposed to have gotten shot real bad in the Indian Territory by some "Indians." He then was nursed back to health by a Cherokee woman. Has anyone seen anything that is more specific about this chapter in Longley's life while in the Indian Territory?

"Kid," where did this story come from? If from Longley, he has been pretty much written off as the biggest liar to come out of Texas. Most authors have a real hard time verifying any of his tales. Rick Miller wrote a good synopsis of Bill's career in the Feb., 2002 issue of Wild West magazine, and though he has Bill going through and to Indian Territory, he does not relate any tales of his remaining for any length of time. Miller also wrote a book on the man, a self publishing effort, called "Bloody Bill Longley." Miller was severely critical of Ed Bartholomew's "Wild Bill Longley" which sort of lumps all the claims Bill ever made and is the root source for most stuff written about him. I'm afraid that chasing down a tale like you're after would be difficult because Bill used a bunch of aliases.

I remember reading this tidbit of information from a book that was a short anthology on gunfighters in the old west. Much of what was written in the past was not very truthful. As racist as Longley was I couldn't see him staying in the Indian Territory very long. Just trying to tie up loose ends on stories concerning the Indian Territory. Thanks

I know this much about Longley. He was hung in 1879 by the state of Texas. He claimed he only regretted one killing. That was the murder of a man in I.T. at a cow camp because he made him nervous.Turned out he was just a man on the dodge too.
When I was living in Texas in the early 1990s..Bills grave was exhumed to see if it was really him there. There was nothing at all in the grave....not him,not another man,not rocks, there was nothing at all..all the naysayers are going after Billy and Jesse when they oughta be checkin this one out.....oh where are ya Bloody Bill...........
