Would Judge Welch have been an enrolled Choctaw, and does anyone have any information about him?

Thank you in advance, Martha.

Also, same questions about / for W.A. Welch, Ranger, 1899, Choctaw Nation. What was a Ranger?

Thank you again!

Hello Martha:

I am no expert on this, but I think the term "Ranger" comes from the early Texas legislature's bill which established a number of "Ranging Companies" to patrol and keep the Comanche in check. Originally, they went where they were needed rather than be tied to a particular place. Any member of these companies were called "Rangers."
