I'm probably the only one reading this forum who didn't know this, but thought I would pass it along for what it is worth.

I had need to verify if an individual was/was not a Deputy U.S. Marshal. I inquired of Mike Tower if he could direct me to a source to do this (other than spendng hours reading newspapers on microfilm). The response was to look at the Annual Report of the U. S. Attorney General. In those reports is a section listing the U.S. Marshals and their deputies.

These reports can be found at state libraries and some university libraries. The Oklahoma State Library has the reports from 1877 throuh 1931. The reports were first issued in 1870 and stopped in 1931. Each state (and territory) is listed giving the names, dates of appt., salaries (and some other information that I didn't pay particular attention to).

Thought I would pass this along in case someone else is trying to verify if an individual served as a marshal or deputy.
