Okay, for those who have the expertise in 'old west' record keeping for Oklahoma Territory; where would one most likely find those records? Looking for records that would have covered Payne & Pawnee counties; maybe some for Logan County. Looking for information for warrants that may have been issued or for records of person being deputized. Time frame of 1890 - 1905.

One bit of information I came across was that some territorial records for Guthrie "are stored in an attic in Guthrie as the courthouse ran out of room". Has anyone ever heard of this? Does the courthouse there have an attic?

Yes, this story is correct. I have seen the territorial records in the Logan County courthouse, a previous sheriff showed them to me. They were in a room that might be considered the attic, it was on the "fourth floor" of the courthouse. The records occupied several boxes.

Thanks for the confirmation. Guess I need to put on my oldest jeans, get the can of bug spray out, gather my flashlight, tie my hair back, and put my best foot forward when I go to Guthrie to try and view those (I do love searching through courthouses). My appreciation.

The story about the records in the courthouse at Guthrie was told to me about 10 years ago when I was looking for Oklahoma federal territorial records that are missing from the National Archives at Fort Worth, Texas. However, if you are looking for information on deputy sheriffs and/or crimes committed at the county level, the county courthouses for the counties you mentioned should have these records. That would be the place to start. However, most courthouses require that you actually show up in person to make inquiry. If they do not have them there, ask if they could have been placed in a local historical society, museum, or library.
Good luck!

Thanks for putting a time frame on this for me. I do plan to go to Guthrie before the end of the year to do a preliminary search. With the construction going on up there, just hope the boxes are still in the "attic". My problem is often I get some sweet young thing who has no idea of what "territorial" means and I have to put myself into the "persistant" mode to talk to a more informed person. Also have plans to "hit" a few other county courthouses. I guess some of you old timers get a chuckle out of us "newbies" in our endeavors.

For Pawnee county the records may be spotty, I haven't personally searched the Sheriff's records and courtroom records, Yet. I have been told that some records had been stored in the basement; and through second and third hand sources have heard that some records were destroyed in the eighties (speciffically Indian records). On a brighter note the county historical society is across the street to the west. The city newspaper may have records, they are north west of the Courthouse, though I'm not sure if they still have territorial those may all be at the state archives.

Bloodhound:

I found some arrest warrant information in Pawnee County for the territorial days.

When you spoke of the county historical society "across the street to the west" are you talking about Pawnee or Logan county?

Thanks for the clarification. I hope to get up to Noble County after Thanksgiving, so will go back thru Pawnee County. I've had great success with the newspapers at OHS, but love getting into the courthouses and historical/genealogical places. I find a lot of good information in some of these out-of-the-way places.

Sure hope they have gotten some rain in Pawnee County. When I was up there earlier this year it was the driest I've seen in the state.

My appreciation.

We got some rain in the Pawnee area, but could still use a couple feet. You may want to check to ensure that the offices you want to visit; or the Historical society to ensure that they are open. If you are traveling any distance it would be agrivating to find the places closed, especially with a sharp shovel to dig through the records.

Frawg,
You probably already have the contcat phone numbers for your Pawnee county research, but since I have been in contact with my mother and received the address, here is the email for Gladys Kitchen; one of the head collections specialists at the Pawnee County Historical Society: gmk_trk@yahoo.com, and use Pawnee County Reseach in the subject line. This way you can ensure the society will be open on the days you intend to research, and that they may have the specific info. you are researching.

Well I made it to Guthrie, Logan County today to "find the boxes in the attic". I learned that the boxes do exist, however they have been microfilmed. Staff in the Court Clerk's office now prefer that persons researching the old territorial papers view the microfilm. Just fine with me as the courthouse was really cold today. In my quest, finding the index on the rolls of microfilm was the key to searching. I managed to get through 29 rolls of microfilm. Will have to make another trip another day to finish up.

Just thought I would let everyone know.
