Thanks Oldwest. I do not have anything on Rufus Binyon or Grant Williams, aka John Newman. Can you give me a lead on where to find information about them. You must have a much better execution list than I have. The best one I have found is on a web site called "Before the Needles" Which is a great site, but I am continuously finding executions that are not listed there.

Grant Williams appeal is in the Oklahoma Criminal Court Of Appeals: 6 Indian Territory 1 (6 I.T. 1); and, here are a few newspaper citations:
Daily Ardmoreite 7/13/1902(p3c1) "Captured In Arkansas" ...killed McDoland & Garvey c1901. Muskogee Democrat 9/23/1905 (8/2) "To Hang..."; 10/30/1905 (1/3) "Won't eat..."; 11/1/1905 (1/1-2); 11/2/1905 (1/1-2); 11/3/1905 (1/1-2) "...paralyzed with tumor on brain..."; and,Daily Oklahoman 11/4/1905 (pg.1) "Negro Executed". Rufus Binyon appeal is also in the Oklahoma Criminal Court of Appeals at {4 Indian Territory 612 (4 I.T. 612)}; and, Muskogee Democrat 9/22/1905 (p1c4)"...hanged at Ardmore for the killing of his 8yr old step-daughter, Mary Hawthorne...". There's a photographic image of the execution of Rufus Binyon at Ardmore in the book "Moman Pruiett - Criminal Lawyer" by Howard K. Berry (1944; pg. 87). {Note: Most library sources mis-identify this literary work -- in their card catalogs -- as an autobiography, "authored by" Moman Pruiett.} |
