It is said J.J. Stewart was at one time a Deputy Marshall; I suppose around Lawton or Washita County, OK. Can anyone confirm this? J.J. Stewart was also a Texas Brand Inspector and later in Life, with one arm, was night watchman in Sentinel, OK until his death in 1936.

Was it a common practice for retired deputies and marshals to become night watchmen? I have come across several mentions of such....Connie

Alot of times, the reference to a "Night Watchman" is referring to a police officer who worked the night shift. Many deputy U.S. marshals later served as deputy sheriffs, Sheriffs, Undersheriffs, constables, and police officers.
