Deputy Sheriff George Tucker of Spanish Fort, on the Red River, ran into L. L. Lamb on day at a dry goods store. Lamb was wanted for cattle rustling. He was ordering supplies from horseback at the store and Tucker asked him to give up his pistol.
Lamb refused as they both drew their pistols. Another deputy was with Tucker and they both staring shooting Lamb. He was hit in the face twice and his jawbone shattered but he fled across the river into Indian Territory.
About 5 or 6 years later Tucker was on a train from Gainesville to Ardmore, I. T. when he ran into Lamb.
Lamb said he had changed his ways and owed it all to Tucker for showing his that his was headed for Hell. Therefore, he became a preacher and became well known.
With Tucker doing his best to kill him, he shot the demons out of Lamb and washed him in the blood of the lamb, so to speak.
It was a story with a good ending and just sort of makes one feel warm and fuzzy all over...!

Norm,

Very interesting story. I'd like to know more about these characters. Would you mind listing your "source(s)" so that we could locate and read the entire account as printed. Dates are important. Thank you!

Old West:
I made another post explaining that I am writing a book on deputy marshal G R Tucker and the Lamb story came from doucmentation by Tucker (unpublished)
My book "Danger Trails" will explain why a manuscript lay hidden (so to speak) for all these years. There are many, many stories like the Lamb story to which little is known.

While no actual date was given, Tucker went to serve a warrant on Lamb in 1886 (late in the year)and Tucker was Town marshal at Spanish Fort and a deputy sheriff of Montague Co., TX.
Lamb was wanted for cow-stealing in Grayson County near Sherman,TX. He had the shotout at Spanish Fort. He said he met him on the train years later between Gainesville and Ardmore, so that would be in the 1890's after the railroad line was established into the Territory.

I am posting some of these stories like yesterdays "Who was Judge South" as feelers to try and gain additional leds for the book.

I hope to finish my manuscript by this summer!

Thanks
