Does anyone have any info or articles on the killing of Sheriff Neely Morrison of Washita County?
Article from The Guthrie Leader of June 26, 1900, "Cloud Chief, June 25 -...Sheriff Neely Morrison was fatally shot and two of his deputies were instantly killed by two escaped outlaws named Casey and McGee." "Casey is a brother of a man who killed the marshal at Oklahoma City a few years ago."
Cloud Chief is near Cordell in Washita County.
Any help would be appreciated.

Dennis,

I think this incident is covered in "Oklahoma Renegades" by Ken Butler. I will check on it for you.

I thought it was the police chief that was killed by James Casey in OKC. And I don't think Ken's book has that much info on the Casey clan. Mr. Lippe would yyou be kind and print the complete newspaper article? The man's name was W. E. Casey.

Butler's book "Oklahoma Renegades" describes Neil Morrison as a deputy sheriff of Washita County. He participated in several attempts capture Bert Casey at the Hughes ranch. The Casey gang was being sought for numerous crimes, including the murder of the sheriff of Roger Mills County. These events involving Morrison described in the book happen in 1902, so I think the newspaper article may be completely wrong. As far as I can tell, Morrison was not killed.

On page 55 of Butler's book is this info:

On Sunday evening, June 30, 1895, Bill and Bob Christian with Jim Casey, the 3 most desperate men in jail, made their break. As the trio fled down the alley, Jim shot and killed Police Chief Milton Jones. A few moments later, Jim Casey was shot and killed by Oklahoma City officer Jackson.

Butler's book goes on to explain that most accounts describe Bert Casey as a brother of Jim Casey, however, Bert may have been a nephew of Jim.

Bert was, not may have been a nephew, Jim and Victor Casey's nephew being the son of their brother.

John, This is the retyped article I have on Morrison.
After going back and rereading about Morrison in "Oklahoma Renegades" I agree with Dee that it appears this article is in error in reporting his death.

The Guthrie Leader
June 26, 1900

"OUTLAWS ESCAPE
Two Prisoners at Cloud Chief Kill Sheriff and Deputies
Special to the Leader.
Cloud Chief, June 25.-- In a running fight in the Caddo country near the Wichita Mountains, Sheriff Neely Morrison was fatally shot and two of his deputies were instantly killed by two escaped outlaws named Casey and McGee.
The two men were prisoners at this place, Casey being held on a charge of murder and McGee for horse stealing. They have been prisoners ever since their incarceration and have been closely guarded, but finally suceeded in aliaying suspicion and escaped Saturday morning, but were closely followed by Sheriff Morrison and two deputies. They made for the mountains but before they got there they were overtaken in an ambush. Their first fire wounded the deputies and in a running fightthat then ensued the two deputieswere killed and Morrison wounded to death. There is a large posse after the two men and they will be captured dead or alive. Intense excitement here where Sheriff Morrison was greatly respected. Casey is a brother of the man who killed the marshal at Oklahoma City a few years ago."

Thank you, Dennis, for the article; Can't think of which brother it could be as the nearest brother is George W. Jr. and he has never shown to be violent and then there was Frank but he died before the census was taken in June of 1900, but come to think of it Bert's daddy was in the area at that time and he was known as a violent man. I'll do some checking and let you know what I find out.

lippe,
After researching the article they were talking about Bert Casey, not a Casey brother, as Morrison stated in an article a year later.
