I don't recall what is in Shirley's books, but Tiger Jack is prominently mentioned by "Eye Witness," the anonymous author of The Dalton Brothers, which originally appeared in 1892 and was later reprinted with an introduction by Burton Rascoe in 1954. "Eye Witness" (whom some suspect was, or was a ghostwriter for, USDM Ransome Payne) tells of a encounter between a posse led by Payne which included (improbably) Fred Dodge of Wells Fargo, "Hec" Thomas, "Burl Cocks" (i.e. Burril Cox) and Tiger Jack, "a faithful and intelligent full-blooded Indian." The posse was formed in May of 1889 in an effort to capture Charlie Bryant and Bob and Emmett Dalton. Supposedly, Tiger Jack's keen sense of smell detected the outlaws lying in an ambush for them, and thus warned they escaped certain death.
