I am soon receiving a copy of W.F. Jones' booklet, The Experiences of a Deputy United States Marshal of the Indian Territory (1937) (I believe that's the title) and wonder if anyone knows more about lawman Jones?

In Robt. K. DeArment's, "Alias Frank Canton," there is a description of a posse smoking out the Shelly brothers near Checotah with Canton claiming credit for devising a way to get the job done. A footnote asserts that Jones later claimed to have been there and claims credit for figuring out how to smoke the badguys out. Jones also names different posse members than Canton. Art Burton's, "Black, Red and Deadly," describes Jones role in the capture of the Rufus Buck gang in 1895. Other references show that Jones was an active deputy from 1885-1902 plus.

I believe the booklet which you are purchasing was derived from an interview Jones did for the Indian Pioneer Papers WPA interviews which are located in the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Western History Library of University of Oklahoma. Jones finished his law enforcement career in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
