Arkansas Gazette, Little Rock, Arkansas, Tuesday, July 7, 1835
Mr. E. Rector, U.S. Marshal for Arkansas, returned to this place, on Saturday last, with a U.S. soldier, named J. Bohard, from Fort Gibson, who is to be arraigned at the ensuing term of the Superior Court, which commences on Monday next, on a charge of killing one of his comrades with his fist, in a fight. There are now four U.S. prisoners in our jail, who are to be arraigned at the Superior Court, for offenses committed beyond our western boundary – a white man, a negro, and an Indian, for murder; and a white man, for horse stealing. We also understand that there is a prospect of several suits being instituted before the same court (but probably not until the next term), against a number of traffickers and suspected manufacturers of Donation Claims, which have recently been proven up at some of our Land offices. Several, we are informed, of those who have been engaged in the business, have recently decamped very suddenly. This, at least, looks suspicious. Diron, This is an area of Oklahoma history deserving of a more intensive treatment. I hope you'll take that task on.

Hey Mike
Are you referring to the law enforcement history in the days prior to the famed Fort Smith days? (ie prior to the Civil War era)? If so I too have felt that is an area that is more deserving of attention. There were some horrific murders, rapes, etc. including lesser offenses such as larceny and whiskey peddling that was going on during the years immediately following the Trail of Tears era. Very very neglected in the history books. On the Trail Diron Ahlquist Secretary, Oklahombres Inc. |
