In your book, Black, Red, and Deadly, you quoted the Oklahoma Times Journal crediting the capture of Bill Carr to Cannon. A Purcell Register, for Friday July 29, 1895 credits Deputy Sheriff B. F. Owens for "getting the drop on him before he had an opportunity to use his weapon..." The article goes on to say Carr was "one of the bravest and nerviest men in the southwest--but he knows what to do when an officer throws down on him with a Winchester and smiled grimly and gave up gracefully when Owens got the drop on him..." The Register was notorious for it's prejudicial views but this article, besides being in direct conflict with the Journal article, reads like a personal account to the reporter. Did Owens attempt to take credit for the capture or was the Register guilty of blue journalism again?
