W U.S. MARSHAL
INDIAN TERRITORY 9/22/1892 Dalton Gang Captured PARIS, Tex., Sept. H. — For some time past Deputy MarahaL Sam Williams of the Fort Smith court has been quietly following the Dalton gang, who robbed tho Missouri, Kansas and Texas railway at Adair, I. T., 011 July 14 last. JHo trailed them out of tho territory into Mexico. ia and thence into Colorado mid Now Mexico. It was believed here that he could not succeed and his efforts wore discouraged, but he doggedly followed his clew. Last night he wired from Deming, N. M,, that he had captured Bob Dalton, Amy Dalton, Grant Dalton, Sam Wingo and Three-fingered Jack and that he would get the other three in a short time. The railroad and express companies offered 2000.00 each for the arrest and conviction of the parties and there ave rewards for the Daltons in California aggregating $11,000 more. The parties will be taken to Fort Smith for trial. It is now believed that this was hoax perpetrated by the Dalton Gang. Marshal Williams has been found murdered, his jaw shot away. It is believed that the gang has fled to Calfornia |

DALTON CAPTURE.
Everybody at Paris Nonplussed by Contradictory Reports. PARIS,Tx.,Sept. 17.—On Wednesday morning a dispatch was received hero from Deming, N. M., signed by Sam Williams, deputy marshal from this court, saying that he had captured Bob, Amy and Grant Dalton, Three Fingered Jack and Sam Wingo. Dispatches from,Deming confirmed this at first, but later denounced the alleged arrests as a hoax. Yesterday an agent of tho Wells Fargo express company at Deming wired here for a description of Williams. The agent sent it promptly and finally answer came to-day to the effect that it did not tally and asked if Williams had lost a portion of his jawbone. The answer went back that he had not. Every body hero is nonplussed Marshal Dickerson of tho eastern district of Texas was interviewed and said he could no! understand it. In his opinion Williams had captured the men and sent the telegrams to throw their friends off their guard and then left for California with them, or he had been murdered and his papers had been scoured by the Dalton Gang Williams has the confidence of all the officers here and none of them believe that he has acted in bad faith. |

Wingo, Ed, was commissioned in the Western District at Ft. Smith, Arkansas, serving under Marshal Jacob Yoes. In January of 1887, Deputy Marshals Wingo and Tyner Hughes arrested Frank Crutchfield in Indian Territory, wanted on a charge of assault with intent to kill. Cruthchfield was taken to the Ft. Smith federal jail, but escaped. Deputy Marshal Pelley shot and badly wounded Crutchfield when he recaptured him in McAlester, Choctaw Nation. on February 7, 1887, he was attempting to arrest a full blood Indian, Mesquite Joe who joined forces with another bad outlaw, named Jim Long. Not to be arrested, Long fired at Wingo’s forces, bringing about a gun battle, causing Long’s death but enabling a wounded Mesquite Joe to escape.
(Ft. Smith Elevator - February 4, 1887) (Heck Thomas) Wingo, Samuel was commissioned on July 21, and in October of 1885, in the Western District at Ft. Smith, Arkansas, serving under Marshal Thomas Boles, assigned to the Choctaw Nation. Deputy Marshal Wingo was commissioned again on November 1, 1886 and March 7, 1888. Two whites - Introducing whiskey in Indian Territory. Frazier killed an infant, the illegitimate offspring of his own daughter. Tom Harjo killed a white man named Holland six years earlier. (Ft. In a separate dispatch to Deming NM the Marshal in Paris asked for description of the person sending the telegraph to Paris. The reply was a man with a pair of fine white handled pistols and part of his left jawbone was shot away. The Marshal in Paris replied that this was a description of Sam Wingo a former Deputy Marshal who was known to have had part of his left jaw shot away in a gunfight.
The sender from Deming New Mexico had all of Deputy Marshal Sam Williams papers and identification and the belief last known was that he had been captured and probably killed. it was suspected that the Gang was trying to throw pursuers off and they were headed to California. Three fingered JAck's real name is Jack Phineas, Jack was later killed in his bed with his wife beside him near Perry Oklahoma, an intruder entered their bedroom and slit his throat ear to ear. This was in 1894, not long after Jack was arrested for murder, not sure why he was in his own bed and not in jail where he was last known to be headed. Many strange things from this country and these people, accuracy of information may also be an issue. |

Looks like you have enough for a short story already. I don't know how it fits but I ran across a document at the following: http://digital.libraries.ou.edu/whc/pioneer/
which is discussing the attempts of the former deputy U. S. Marshals to get a pension. It mentions an Otis Wingo of Arkansas making a plea for the cause in April, 1922. I'll keep my eyes open for whatever else I can find. |

From the Muskogee Indian Journal, October 22, 1885: ...The deputy U. S. Marshals for Creek and Cherokee Nations are Andrew Smith, Elias Andrews, W. F. Jones, Bud T. Kell and Sam Sixkiller; for Choctaw Nation, Tyner Hughes, John Farr, J. W. Searle, and Sam Wingo...
From Deadly Affrays, by Robert Ernst, p. 210, “On the same day, May 17, 1887, Heck Thomas was assigned to find (Ned) Christie, (Bud) Trainer, and John Parris (suspects wanted for the slaying of deputy Dan Maples…) A few days later the Cherokee Nation High Sheriff arrested Parris and held him for the arrival of Thomas. On May 21, 1887, Thomas and his posse, Sam Wingo, arrived in Ft. Smith with Parris and a Harvey Dale, wanted for burglary of a Ft. Gibson stone… From Heck Thomas, by Glenn Shirley, p. 76: On February 7 (1887,) Deputy Marshal Ed Wingo and his posse saw two Indians entering a shack on the Canadian River, twenty miles west of Eufaula. Believing one of them to be (Charley) Narcomey, they approached to investigate, when the Indians opened on them with Winchesters. The officers returned the fire, but the Indians succeeded in standing them off, and they rode away as if leaving the neighborhood. Instead they hid in the woods nearby. Within a few minutes, the Indians dashed from their shack for their horses. A pitched battle ensued. One bullet splinted a tree in front of Wingo’s eyes, nearly blinding him. He killed one of the Indians and shot his companion in the leg. But the Indian succeeded in reaching his pony and escaped…It was later learned the dead man was a half Seminole and half Mexican outlaw called “Long Jim” and his companion was “Mesquite Joe” wanted for introducing and selling whiskey. Heck Thomas found Joe so severely wounded he could not travel by wagon and had to be hauled to Ft. Smith via hack. Fort Smith Elevator, November 14, 1884, p. 5: …Sam Wingo returned James Boles, assault with intent to kill and he was committed to jail. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Tower, |

Seems that these folks have inclinations both ways. I sincerely appreciate your replies. When I think I have looked everywhere someone comes up with something else I have not seen. I have so many things I want the world to see about ol Sam and Ed but dont want to burden things, anyway, here are a couple. |

We have a website, the freebie type for members, called officialcoldcaseinvestigations.com.
One url is : http://officialcoldcaseinvesti...forumdisplay.php?f=9 that is historical cases, but is in it's infancy and not a lot about western outlaws. This is Sams url there:http://officialcoldcaseinvestigations.com/showthread.php?t=3951 Feel free to come and browse, join, we are proud to be a site such as this one where there are no hidden click ads and money making "crap". It is pure information. I think I may start a forum on old west outlaws , there certainly are many. The intent of the developers of OCCI was to deal in unidentified remains. But we ( I ) have strayed from that. If you join let us know you are from Oklahmbres and don't know what special thing that may mean but will certainly let folks know you are from here and tout this great site. |

Actually there is another as well that I cannot find my copy of where William Wilson Wingo, mt great grandfather makes the same type plea on behalf of the Marshals. No wonder there were "extra jobs" back then with the deputies getting no salaries and , 6 cents a mile and 50 cents for a writ. I have seen some accounts of Marshals trailing ratons from Oklahoma to Colorado and down to new Mexico and back. Musta made a few dollars on that but wondered what they used for mapquest. |

This is a railroad Sam Wingo worked for as a detective or Peace Officer: Following the description of the railroad is an excerpt from Pioneer records interview with Sams brother, William W Wingo.
With these two extensions, by the end of 1898 the Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railway was operating 270 miles of railroad, but largely starting nowhere and ending nowhere. http://www.cityofhartshorneok.com/history.htm The Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad (CO&G) incorporated in 1894 acquired the foreclosed Choctaw, Coal & Railway. The CO &G connected over 220 miles of track with postal service and by 1896, there was a dependable mail route for the growing communities in what became Pittsburg County. Interview William Wilson Wingo: My father and mother died, and were buried in the State of Arkansas, when I was a great big boy, along in the year of/1888. 1 then settled in what was Just a little settlement named Hartshorne.' My brother lived there, and his name/was Sam Wingo; he was a United States Marshal then. He got to be company marshal for the new. -Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad- that came through this nation along in 1890. |

I am starting now what I cannot back up nor prove in any way. While Oklahoma was fairly large in size, there is a confined area of Latimer County where Belle Starr holed up at a place called Robbers Cave this same area and in contemporaneous time Sam and Ed Wingo ( and families) lived in that are. Relatives lived there , well even now.
Good ol family legend has it there was some connection between Sam and Belle, not sure whether romantic or business. The rest of family legend has played out supported by what I have found in documents. On Ol Sam-hope I am not repeating myself. Sam was a Marshal (verified), in the 1880s (verified) and got into hassles with his own lawmen (verified by charges of escape, murder and assault). Sam worked for the Choctaw railroad (the railroad ran right by their homeplace in Gowen and the railway was not all that long) Sam was said to have shot the wrong man (verified) was taken to Fort Smith for incarceration (verified) but also that he assaulted escorting deputies on more than occassion and escaped (verified)..The remaining story is upon last escape he went to California, (cannot verify that) but have news account of him in Deming NM in 1892. The ending accounts are that he made his way to Hawaii and was Chief of Police in Honolulu ( far out and all their records pre-1936 were destroyed by fire) On the California note I found where Samuel W Wingo whose father was Willis P and mother was Caroline ( verified) had a son named Arthur Samuel Wingo born 1878 ( Sam would have been 15) and this particular man did die in California in 1955. The mother is said to have been Elizabeth Hills Wingo, bit there is an absence of information on her. I hope I am not overstepping by writing as I am and not waiting until I have a full story as suggested. I simply wanted this information out there in case it strikes a note with a reader. Thanks Belle Starr, also known as the "Bandit Queen" and the subject of much speculation in innumerable stories and popular publications, was born Myra Maybelle (or Belle) Shirley on February 5, 1848, on a farm near Carthage, Missouri, one of six children and the only daughter of John and Elizabeth (or Eliza) (Hatfield) Shirley. Within a few years, the Shirleys moved into Carthage, where they were living when the Civil War started. |
