I just got the Summer, 2006 issue of the Chronicles of Oklahoma. There are two fine articles pertinent to this board. The first by Von Russel Creel entitled "On the Gallows Edge," is a discussion of the executions (or lack of them) from the Indian Territory Federak District Courts. This is actually a follow up to an earlier article but I like this one much better. It explains that between 1896, when these courts were given the power to impose the death penalty, 19 persons were sentenced to die; 10 were hanged and 8 escaped the gallows. The remainder of the article deals with the last eight and explains what saved them and where they went next.
The second is for you gangsta buffs. By Andrew L. Warren and called "Earning their spurs in the Oil Patch: the Cinematic FBI, the Osage Murders, and the Test of the American West," the article is exceptionally well written and entertaining. Warreb pulls no punches and rips the Federal Bureau of Ineptitude, Hoover, the local LE, and anyone else who has attempte to profit from the Osage murders. This message has been edited.
